We chatted with Louise Fisher the Tokito and T by Bettina Liano buyer as well as Jessica Gibbins the Myer Miss Shop buyer, after their recent buying trip. These ladies know a thing or two about the fashion buying business. Prepare to be inspired and incredibly jealous of their recent travels overseas.
Where did you go on your latest buying trip?
New York, LA and London.
What trends did you see on the streets?
They were all rugged up at this time. Cocooned looks, tight jeans, chunky boots and oversized jackets.
What was your favourite find at the Vintage Market you visited?
Love the fabulous prints, trims and style inspiration. It also makes for great people watching.
What was the key colour palette of the season?
It starts soft and fem. Terracotta [is] back with neutral nude tones, purple caste denim, creams, crochet… this opening transitions into brights, stark white, indigos mixed back with pinky reds and bright spring florals (in the spirit of Dolce and Gabanna). Just a taste of the first 3 months.
What key pop cultural references influenced fashion in this area?
70’s Californian influences. She is not a flower child, she isn’t going to San Francisco, she is on the road to Mexico, travelling through the Californian desert, what would she be playing on her radio at this time?
What are some best-kept secrets about the places you visited?
This one is hard. Always trying new restaurants, gravitating to a bit of Cuban and Mexican in New York - can’t get it here as much. Always loving the streets of New York. Mott St in Soho provides lots of new inspirations and outlets. LA - loving the road to the OC, driving along Pacific Coast Hwy, sea spray is thick, catching the key swimwear looks at Huntington, soaking up the Californian atmosphere, the warm yellow glow just before dusk.
Ah sounds like paradise.
Asia De Cuba at the Mondrian in LA has a great restaurant for “star spotting” (not sure if you’d classify Bryan McFadden as a “star” but we don’t have to mention names!!) And maybe Mercer Kitchen in Soho, New York as another celeb hangout (Courtney Love -a better spot!!)
What’s your one piece of style advice?
“Gather the flowers as you go otherwise you may miss them coming back.” If you love something buy it! You might miss it coming back. [It’s] A poem my Nan taught me, to be applied to shopping - very important when shopping for those unique vintage pieces.
