Say ‘hello’ to our main man- Martin Solveig!
The house music man of the hour Martin Solveig took the time out from a busy USA tour to chat to us about his love of Australia, his forthcoming album and his upcoming tour as part of Creamfields!
1. You are a seasoned performer in Australia, what are your best memories when you come here every year?
There are so many… I’ve always loved playing in Australia, the vibe of your festivals is really unique & your crowds are among the best in the world. I’m so excited to be back!
2. You have had a long and extremely successful career with many iconic electronic releases such as ‘Rockin Music’, ‘Edony’ and ‘Everybody’. It seems that the last few releases have crossed over to become charting commercial radio hits, especially with ‘Boys and Girls’ and ‘Hello’, was this part of the plan?
There is no plan because there can’t be one and people who make plan in music often fail because you never know how people are going to react to a song. And now in 2011, with the speed of Internet it can go absolutely every way. So I try to make records I want to listen to and play in clubs & fests. The rest doesn’t belong to me.
3. We are major fans of Dragonette who feature in your latest two chart hits, how did the collaboration come about?
It actually started in Australia 2 years ago when we met on the same tour. I saw Dragonette perform and I felt we could make something cool together. Then I had the chance to collaborate with Jean Paul Gaultier & create a track for the anniversary of his “Madame” perfume. I had this idea of a duet with a girl & thought that Martina from Dragonette would be perfect. I love her voice & attitude, that’s why I decided to work with her again on “Hello”. She has more songs to come in the Smash album actually.
4. You manage your own record label Mixture Stereophonic, what acts do you have signed to the label?
None. Mixture is now a hub for all my single releases with a club edge, including many remixes. Remixes are a way for me to welcome producers I like into the Mixture family. My ‘manageur’ Lafaille actually started working on his own productions, so there might be a couple of suprises coming from Mixture in the future…
5. When can we expect your forthcoming album ‘Smash’ to be released in Australia, any exciting collaborations on the album?
I’m working hard to finish the album & release it before European summer (that’s June). Lots of exciting collaborations on the album indeed, I’m now lucky enough to work with people I’ve always admired – the next single is the perfect example as you’ll discover very soon. I’m super excited about this record, it’s one of my favorites.
6. You perform as part of Creamfields, what can the crowd expect from your set this year?
Some smashing tracks from the album, a couple of exclusive home-made bootlegs & above all, lots of fun and energy! We’ll also shoot the final episode of the Smash web series there. Believe me, I won’t be coming just to say “Hello”…
7. Are there any artists you’ll be checking out yourself at Creamfields?
Sure, there are many! For sure I’ll be checking out Skrillex (we actually have the same label in the US), of course Deadmau5 & my mates from Dada Life, Bingo players… We should have a really great time all together!
8. In terms of fashion, are there any items in your wardrobe you can’t live without?
It’s all about the headband man. You made this one easy.
Thanks for taking the time out of your busy schedule to speak to us. We wish you all the best on your tour in April/May as part of Creamfields.
